Living in Style: Book Discussion
Help! I can't stop buying books. This is my latest book hoard! After sales tax, I spent $7.59 on this book. I started this blog planning on taking inventory of all the books that I already own. Now I'm adding to my book clutter. I bought so many books that I hadn't even flipped open after I brought them home. I had literally lost track of what books I have...I recognize that I have a problem. I need a shrink!
In the meantime, I hope I can get some reading out of this book. Please feel free to discuss this book in the comment area below if you happen to be reading it too.

I just read 23 pages of this book and I'm furious when I read about once again the importance of doing "coffee runs" if you want to be successful in your career. What's this crap about doing coffee runs in the USA? I had worked overseas and one thing that surprised me during my overseas working experience was, no college grad, and absolutely nobody with a master degree was doing coffee runs or takeout runs like I had to do when I started out my new job in the USA. When I asked why, the president of that foreign company told me, "Why should we waste productivity like this? It's cheaper to hire high school dropouts to make or buy coffee, and cheaper to tip the delivery guy at the coffee shop to do the delivery. We require college and master degrees from our new hires because we need them to work at the professional duties that require their education, coffee run isn't one of such."
ReplyDeleteBut in the USA, "coffee runs" seem to be some kind of dues everybody MUST pay in order to climb up that corporate ladder. They are like badges of honor we have to wear to prove we are passionate about our jobs. Sorry, that only proves that we are willing to do anything stupid just to keep the job, never mind whether the practice is rational or good for the company. We will accept whatever way of doing things just to keep the job, and we don't have the courage to reject it even if it's wrong. Junior engineers, management consultants, editors, producer, and whatever jobs that say, "junior or associate", seem to require "coffee runs" and "meal runs" if they want to impress their supervisors.
To me, "Coffee Runs" is a huge waste of productivity and human resources. I've been resenting this since day one when I was asked to do it and all these years when I have to witness other young people doing it for me and the team. Whenever I saw this happened at my work, I always wanted to scream, "Please don't buy my freaking coffee or dinner, sit your ass at the desk and get the real job done so our team don't have to stay in the conference room until 2am!" But I was never the one to call such shots, my boss always made the young professionals run around town for errands that are totally irrelevant to our core project, and then I ended up being locked up in the sweaty and stinky conference room with the team into dawn. I often wonder if only our junior team members stop running around for coffee and food, we can all go home earlier!
If I own my own business, I will ban coffee runs, meal runs and all kinds of errands that are totally not critical to the core project. No highly educated employee should be made to get food, shop for snacks, get takeout meals, make photocopies or brainlessly scan documents. I will fire any senior manager or team manager for such poor use of time and talent when there are so many apps out there that can do such very tedious chores.
