My Book Party

I read about this book from an ads in a magazine that I just read , which is a confirmation that print ads do work quite effectively in promoting a new book. I had  never lived in a small town that has a population under 7 million, and I'm curious about what kind of engrossing story a small town can have.  If you are reading this book now, please feel free to post your opinion in the comment area below and share your reading joy with me.

This is one of the magazines that I used to subscribe.  I cancelled my subscription because I have no space for magazines that I don't really read.  This magazine always has  a very attractive cover photo which is what enticed me into subscribing. Among the stacks of the old issues, I had only recently read one article so far in the "Life Lessons" section.  It was simply a waste of my 10 minutes.  I read it because I felt curious while I was unboxing my moving box full of Real Simple Magazines.  I hear that the magazine pays $2.00 for every word.  But is "Life Lessons" a section that pays writers for the essay or it's a vanity section that lets writers  provide free essays in exchange for a by-line? For years, I had let this book buried in one of my moving boxes. Tonight, I finally have a chance to read the first few pages, only to discover that this book isn't a fictional thriller that I thought it was when I bought it.  Yes, I remember buying this book from the bookstore while waiting to meet my date there.... This book is actually a non-fiction about a real fraud case that inflicted billions of dollars of losses on a lot of pension funds, (government's included), charities, individual investors, etc. etc. A few pages in, I had  read that for 9 years, the author had been working with a team to bring the Madoff investment ponzi scheme to the attention of the SEC's attention (a government's wall-street) but failed... So, the old adage that my grandparents always chanted: "Don't depend on the government!" is true. I have a feeling that this book is going to be very interesting and a better page-turner than the so-called literature fiction ...

I enjoyed reading this single issue magazine that is dedicated to container gardening.  I love that this magazine has no ads.  I never took an interest in gardening because I grew up in tiny condo in the city.  I have no idea why I bought this magazine.  I think I bought this gardening magazine while waiting at the grocery store's checkout line.  It was just one of those impulsive purchases.  The beautiful photos inside the magazine are quite inspiring and they make me want to  have some pots of flowers in my apartment.  But after flipping through the beautiful magazine, I still hadn't had the motivation to actually plant anything.  I guess it's because I didn't bother to read the text?  I didn't read the text because I couldn't focus on reading text on magazines. I don't live in a house. I never lived in a house.  I have no idea why I even bought gardening books when I don't have a yard, particularly when I bought the same book twice.  Now I end up having 2 of the exact same big gardening book.   So I'm now selling one of them at a deep discount , to make space in my little apartment.  It's brand new and never read. I saw this book all the time when I shopped at grocery stores and drug stores.  I had to fight to resist the temptation of the beautiful book cover to refrain from buying another book that my bookshelf currently has no space to keep .  As soon as I thought I forgot about this book, I read about it on one of my magazines .  This book really has powerful marketing to make itself visible to me, tempting me... I always hear people say, "Just when you think you know someone, you actually don't."  In my case, I I realize that while I think I know everything about myself, I actually don't.  Just look at this book that I just fished out from my moving box from years ago!  I don't remember why I bought this book. I didn't major Marketing in college, and I'm not working in the marketing field. I don't even remember where I bought this book. It's in brand new condition, a hardcover.  So obviously,  I had never read it, but I own it.   Should I list this for sale on my Bookshelf Clearance page or should I hang onto it for a while? After reading a few pages of this book, all I know about Google is it hires tens of thousands of its employees largely using one baseline criteria, which is a college GPA of  3.0 or higher.  I'm surprised that being an innovative tech company, Google is having such an old school paradigm on hiring talents.. I read about this book from one of the magazines that I just read , it looks like a thrilling book to read for the summer, if only I don't have too many books to read already. This is one of my impulse purchases at the airport.  I just can't resist any magazine that has a mouth watering food photo as a cover.  The following article is the only thing I had read so far though.  I'm not a newspaper reader or subscriber, but somehow I find it fascinating to read about the problems & troubles within the L.A. Times regarding the brain drain, "You don't quit the Los Angeles Times to go to Kaiser Health News or Reuters. These people are not quitting the Times. They're quitting to leave their bosses."

My moving box that I cast away to the corner of my living room few years ago is like a time capsule that is telling the present me what type of person I used to be.  This book that I recently fished out from that box told me that my current anxiety has been an old problem.  But when I thought my anxiety needed help to be dealt with back then, I didn't know fast forwarding few years into the future, I'm actually more anxious now. At least I learn that anxiety doesn't get better with age.  It actually gets worse. I didn't read this book back then when I bought it brand new. I learnt about this book from the US Weekly Magazine that I just read. Jenny McCarthy (some celebrity I don't know) reportedly says this is a page turner.  I wonder why a single banana was used on the cover and why was the banana encrusted with diamonds?  Anyone knows if the cover image carries special meaning to the story of the book?  If you have read this book, please feel free to share your opinion with me in the following comment area.  

My interest in any particular book only lasts for the  few minutes when I hold it to admire the cover.  This is yet another brand new, unread book that I just fished out of a moving box that I should have unpacked long time ago....  I don't know how long it will take me to finally clear out this one moving box...I bought this book because I literally wanted to learn how to sew a button.  I still don't know how because I haven't had the time to get to the chapter where it will teach me how.  My grandma once said I would be among the first to die if there were a war...She blamed my mom for never teaching me the very basic domestic skills.  I guess this is why a lot of the mothers-in-law don't get along with the daughters-in-law.  To save my mother from more future blame,  I wanted to show my grandma that I at least knew how to sew a button...This desire has stayed on my to-do list for a very long time.  Sorry, mom, my will power is just not ...

I have no idea who's Teresa so I have no interest in reading her cover story in this magazine.  I haven't had a TV since I started college so I've lost track of who is who on TV.  I do know who LeAnn Rhimes is because I love one of her songs, "How Do I Live"   I didn't read her story either because I have very short attention for everything.  I went straight to the recipes and I like to read about the books showcased in this issue. I'm not a cook and I'm not an avid reader of any books. But I like to look at mouth watering food photos to hope that  I will get inspired enough to start cooking.  I also like to be aware of the latest fictions out there.  I just love to see the pretty book covers and I enjoy reading their short synopsis. Now that I'm done reading this magazine, I would like to make space on my bookshelf.  I'm listing it for sale at $0.01 on my Bookshelf Clearance page.

This is another cookbook that I bought when I moved out of my college dorm to live off-campus.  I never read it, never cooked any of the recipes in this book.  I bought this book from the bookstore out of my euphoria of being free in an apartment off campus.  I later moved back to the dorm when I realized  that I preferred to have a tiny dorm room all to myself instead of sharing an apartment with a roommate.  I also loved the fact that the cafeteria was only an elevator ride away.  I thought I would learn how to cook by living off campus. The reality was, there was one tiny kitchen in one tiny apartment that I had to share with my roommate who never cleaned up after she cooked.  My roommate had actually taken complete ownership of that tiny kitchen because she cooked all the time and she just left behind her dirty pots and dishes. The sink was always filled with dirty dishes.  I lost my interest and motivation to try cooking when I walked into...

This is another book I found when I visited one of my moving boxes this morning.  This book is in brand new condition and was never opened. It shocks me that I bought it because I don't remember when or why.  I just started reading while having my morning coffee.  I'm not much a reader and yet I bought this book.  Was I possessed? I bought this glossy cookbook when I moved out of the dorm in college. I had never read it because I didn't cook like I planned to.  I was so overwhelmed with studying and working that I kept eating at the college cafeteria and ordering Chinese takeout...I still am not cooking at all because I continue to depend on takeouts now... I feel too overwhelmed to cook and I find that I wasted a lot more money on shopping for grocery that went spoiled.  Restaurant takeout costs me about $10/day for both lunch and dinner. (I order meals that include veggies as often as I can.) This $10 however  doesn't include the $0.59 I spend on every navalorange that I try to eat everyday. I guess it will cost me  more if I am to make my own Paninis at home? While I never tried out the recipes in this book, you are welcome to share your opinion on this book in the comment area below if you have tried some of its recipes.  Or if you want to get a copy of this hardcover for $1....

I bought the book brand new back in 2009 for $27.00 (with taxes) from Borders (the bookstore where I hanged most of the time).  I bought it at the time because my friends were talking about signing up on Twitter and when I saw this book, I was planning to learn about what made Twitter anymore special than Myspace & Facebook where I was an extremely active user back then.  But lots of things happened in life to keep me so busy that I literally abandoned my accounts on both Facebook & Myspace; and I just never read this book or had the time to sign up on Twitter until now. Recently I've been starting to open up my moving boxes that I had ignored since I moved to this town few years ago... I can't believe it's been years and I haven't completely unpacked yet. Free copies of Time magazine are some of the perks I receive in my commoner life. I get them merely from networking.  I guess it's sometimes true that it's not about how hard you work for something but who you know.  My friend's mom always brought home Time magazines that her employer no longer wanted. As my friend got busier and busier in school and at work, she no longer was able to keep up with the magazines her mom got from her boss who also never got the time to read all the free magazines she received...  One day I discovered that the recycling bin in my friend's garage was filled up with unread glossy magazines, so I asked to have them.  Since then, my friend's mom has been diligently saving the magazines for me to pick up.  I was never a subscriber of Time because I'm only interested in reading fashion magazines.  But now that I got them for free, I'm starting to enjoy reading them.  I don't read every page, I just read the articles that c...

Help! I can't stop buying books.  This is my latest book hoard! After sales tax, I spent $7.59 on this book.  I started this blog planning on taking inventory of all the books that I already own. Now I'm adding to my book clutter.  I bought so many books that I hadn't even flipped open after I brought them home. I had literally lost track of what books I have...I recognize that I have a problem.  I need a shrink!
